Optimizing patient care: rethinking referrals for iron deficiency anemia in internal medicine
In this letter, we address the prevalent issue of inappropriate referrals of iron deficiency anemia patients to hematologists by internal medicine specialists. Emphasizing that iron deficiency anemia extends beyond hematological boundaries, we advocate for a nuanced understanding among primary care clinicians. By encouraging collaboration with relevant specialties, such as gastroenterology and nutrition, we aim to optimize patient care, alleviate strain on specialized services, and promote a more efficient healthcare system.
