Investigation of restricting factors of participation in individuals with cerebral palsy: the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health for Children and Youth verson framework
Aims: To determine the factors restricting participation in individuals with CP and evaluating them by International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health Children and Youth Version (ICF-CY) framework.
Methods: In this cross-sectional study individuals were classified according to the Gross Motor Classification System (GMFCS), Manual Ability Classification System (MACS) and Communication Function Classification System (CFCS). Socio-demographic information of the individuals (age, height, weight, educational status, place of residence, parental age, educational status etc.) were recorded. Activity participation was assessed by Child and Adolescent Scale of Participation (CASP). The factors restricting the individual's participation in the activity were questioned and categorized by ICF-CY framework.
Results: As the GMFCS, MACS and CFCS levels of individuals increased, the participation scores decreased. There was no difference between CASP scores, gender and living area (p=0.876, p=0.953). There was a difference between parental education level, child education level and CASP scores (respectively p=0.037, p=0.000). Body structure and functions (56.4%) were found to be the most restricting factors for participation from the perspective of the parents.
Conclusion: Interventions for motor deficiencies in individuals with CP and awareness-raising practices to prevent these individuals from being socially excluded from society may increase participation.
